How to use your data to make your customers love you

I’m thinking of opting out of shopping at one of my favorite stores.

I’ve gone there for years. I order from them online, the service is impeccable, and I like the choices they give me.

But I made the mistake of ordering a birthday gift for my daughter from them. Now they’re treating me like a teenage girl. The emails and offers I get are completely inappropriate.

I thought they knew me. But clearly I was wrong.

If they just paid attention, they’d see the purchase of this gift was a one-time thing. Credit card companies can flag unusual activity on your account. They’ve been doing it for years — and in real time. It’s not asking too much for marketers to stop and look at the data before they send out an email.

The world is changing. Our customers don’t all look alike anymore — if they ever did. If you want to keep your customers and grow your business, you need to get to know them intimately. Here are three rules for using your data to make your customers love you.
